Choice 01

Smoothing

At 5 km on a 20 km grid, a bar of 207 means 207 buildings in that cell. Widening the bandwidth spreads each facility across its neighbours. The slider goes to zero.

Choice 02

Markets

A market is a cluster: facilities within 22 km of another member, eight minimum. Clusters chain — Northern Virginia runs 116 km from the District through Loudoun County. Names come from each cluster's most common city.

Choice 03

Equal area

Every cell covers 400 km², but equal area is not square: 22.8 by 17.5 km on the Gulf coast, 16.5 by 24.2 km at the Canadian border. A conic projection would leave cells 15° off north in Massachusetts. —
